Digital biomarkers are indicators of physiologic and physical processes of the human body, measured objectively and continuously as a digital signal using digital tools such as mobile phones and wearable devices. Since it has the advantage of being objective and continuously measurable in the real world, it can replace or supplement the traditional outcome measurements that are subjective and intermittently measurable. Recently, a major concern of digital biomarkers is the application to evaluate and monitor movement disorders and dementia such as Parkinson??s disease and Alzheimer??s disease. Attempts have also been made to apply digital biomarkers to mental health and mental illness such as depression. Hence, stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, which treats movement disorders, mental disorders, and pain, is the most practical field for the application of digital biomarker. The authors introduce the concept and potential of digital biomarkers in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and recommend that neurosurgeons show more interest and commence research in this field.
